Sharon
Springs is located at the northwest corner of Schoharie County in
beautiful upstate New York. Located approximately
1 hour west of Albany, ½ hour from Cooperstown, 1 hour from Utica,
1½ hours from Saratoga, and 3 ½ hours from New York City,
it is centrally located to major cities. It is situated in a picturesque
area and occupies the region between the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains.
Many attractions
are less than a ½ hour away i.e. Cooperstown
NY, where Clark Gymnasium, Otsego Lake, Glimmerglass Opera, Fenimore
House, Baseball Museum, and lots of unique shops are located. Mary Imogene
Bassett Hospital, a prominent hospital facility, is also located in Cooperstown.
Howe Caverns, Secret Caverns, Iroquois Museum, George Landis Arboretum,
Erie Canal, Old Stone Fort, Bramanville Grist Mill, Saratoga Performing
Arts Center, Saratoga Race Track, and State University of New York at
Cobleskill are also just a stone’s throw away.
Sharon Springs boasts many panoramic views. Most roads wind through
the rolling hills of farm country and many look north toward the beautiful
Mohawk Valley. Sharon’s history is rich and the community gained international
fame through the popularity of its mineral waters as the social elite
came to “take the waters.” In 1994, the spa district of Sharon Springs was listed in New York’s
Register of Historic Places and the National Register.
Sharon’s
architecture and rich history have attracted entrepreneurs who are
establishing businesses in historic buildings and several older
residences are also being remodeled. In 1975, a new firehouse was built
on Beechwood Road. A modern water pumping system was completed in 1991
and a new sewage plant was built in 1997. A recent addition to the Sharon
Springs Central School was completed in 2002.
The Sharon Historical Society, organized in 1975, maintains a small
museum in the center of the spa district, open every day during the summer
months. The Sharon Springs Chamber of Commerce was reorganized in 1993,
the same year that the Sharon Springs Citizens Council of the Arts was
organized. Many organizations successfully serve the community, such
as Rotary Club, Fire Department, Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Rescue
Squad, American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Booster Club, Parent
Teacher Student Organization, Twentieth Century Club, various church
groups, as well as scout groups.
The Reformed Church, Rose of Sharon Church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church,
St. Matthew’s Lutheran Chapel, St. John’s Lutheran Church, and the United
Methodist Church serve the religious needs of the community.
A wide variety of approximately 150 businesses are located in the Town
of Sharon, i.e. lodging, dance studio, art studios, automobile repair,
car wash, computer consultants, construction contractors, convenience
stores, dentists, farms, farm equipment dealers, gift shops, restaurants,
senior housing, trucking, and a Wal-Mart Distribution Center to name
a few.
The Sharon Springs Free Library, chartered in 1911, has the distinction of
being the first public library in Schoharie County. In 2004, the Library
purchased an old building and renovated it into a new Library and Municipal
Office Complex at 129 Main Street.
